FRISCO – The 17th Annual Colorado BBQ Challenge this weekend drew 68 teams competing for a total of $15,000 in prize money.

The categories included just about all types of smoked meat along with sauces, sides and more. Winners were announced Saturday afternoon at the Frisco Historic Park.

A team from Great Bend, Kansas named 4 Legs Up won reserve grand champion for its overall success in the spectrum of categories, as well as first place in the dessert category. The dessert: pork muffins and ice cream.

Team member Kelly Wertz was tight-lipped when asked to disclose just what goes into the pork muffin recipe.

“It’s made in a smoker,” he said, adding that pork is one of the ingredients.

Wertz said he credits the team’s success to six years of practice. The team won grand champion at Frisco’s 2009 BBQ Challenge.

This year’s grand champion and reserve grand champion won $3,000 and $1,500, respectively.

Meats, sides and desserts were judged a few hours before the winners were announced. The meat categories in the Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned event were scored on appearance, flavor and texture.
