Longtime Breckenridge local Richard Orwig, known to friends as Dick, died Wednesday night at the age of 82.
His death is still under investigation, according to a report from the Summit County Coroner’s Office.
Orwig was originally from Youngstown, Ohio, but had lived in Breckenridge with his wife, Maryellen, since 1976. The couple owned and ran several retail stores before their retirement and were regulars out at local restaurants in the community long afterward.
Orwig was a big supporter of the Breckenridge Film Festival, known for giving opening night parties and participated in the town’s annual Fourth of July parade.
“He was one of the good shoot ’em up cowboy guys,” longtime friend and Summit County manager Gary Martinez said. “It’s too bad. We’ll remember him next year.”
Orwig walked in the Independence Day parade right up through this year, into his 80s. Even then, his only disappointment with the event was that the fire danger prevented him from participating in the traditional Old West shoot-out as part of the parade.
Orwig’s wife, Maryellen died last year, succumbing to a series of ongoing health problems. The couple have two children, Richard (Rick) and Elizabeth (Liz).
