Make a new drink for dad this Father’s Day
Ryan Summerlin June 16, 2012
Father’s Day is never easy to plan and some dads are even harder to find gifts for. Does he want to go on a refreshing hike? Or just spend the day cooped up in the man cave? Maybe he wants to get the family together for a Sunday barbecue in the backyard since the weather has been so great.
To help make dad’s day just how he wants it, try getting him a new drink that suits the day’s activities. Something like whisky or rum should do the trick; he can sip it at the backyard barbecue with the family, after an energizing morning hike, or just lounging in his favorite La-Z-Boy chair with the Rockies game on TV.
Take a look at some of these whiskies and rums that will be a hit with dad on the one day a year when it’s all about him.
For the barbecue, hand your dad a Mason jar of 100 proof whisky from Ole Smoky Moonshine. This authentic moonshine made from a 150-year-old recipe is sure to please the grill master as he flips burgers out on the deck.
The White Lightnin’ flavor is Ole Smoky’s alternative to vodka, gin and tequila. It’s made from 100 percent grain neutral spirits that have been distilled six times for premium smoothness. Use White Lightnin’ in any cocktails, like apple pie, moonshine margaritas or moonshine mojitos.
Retailing at $20-$25, Ole Smoky Moonshines are easily ordered online at www.olesmokymoon
shine.com. If you’re willing to make the drive, it is for dad after all, Colorado Beverage Distributor Company. Give them a call at (303) 371-3421 to make sure they’ve got it in stock.

For something a little more high class, bring your dad a tumbler of Balblair Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
Balblair is known for its vintages, which also makes it great for a day in the man cave. Aged in American ex-bourbon oak barrels, Balblair whiskies are named for the year they were made, not with an age statement.
Only the finest whiskies – those that have matured and reached absolute perfection – are handpicked each year to be released. Balblair is characterized not only by its striking look, but by notes of vanilla, warm toffee and fruits. Balblair’s award-winning portfolio recently received a gold medal from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and Beverage Testing Institute for its 1989 and 2000 vintages.
Balblair’s vintages range in prices, from $90 to $1,000 for that really special dad. Pick up a bottle from the local liquor store, as most have the vintages stocked.
Not willing to spend $1,000 on a whisky, even if your dad is really special? Try Speyburn Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky, 2011’s number five top single malt.
Also referred to as the “everyman malt,” Speyburn is an affordable, quality Scotch distilled using water from the Granty Burn, a tributary of the River Spey in Scotland, recognized for its purity and word-class salmon fishing. Speyburn’s smooth lemon and caramel flavors are a great addition to any outdoor adventure. Speyburn was also recently recognized at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the Ultimate Spirits Challenge.
This scotch won’t break the bank, and leaves room for more gifts, at about $40 a bottle.
