Obituary: Claudia “Cloud” Stein

Claudia “Cloud” Stein

Dec 16, 1939 – Oct 04, 2015

After a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, Cloud peacefully departed this life in her home, with the sunset, on Oct. 4, 2015. Cloud will be remembered for her unique style, positive attitude, loving energy, and zest for life. Her favorite mantra was, “love is all there is.” Cloud is survived by her two daughters, Mishele (h. Todd Carroll) and Lisa; and four grandchildren, Cade, Magnus, Nash, and Mirabel.

Claudia Diann Schalm was born in Berkeley, California, graduated from Davis High School in 1957, and earned a B.A. degree from UC Davis 1963. While on an academic fellowship to study German at CU Boulder, she met and fell in love with Fredrick “Fred” Stein. The two were married in 1965, and then joined the Peace Corps, where they spent two years teaching in Columbia, South America from 1965-67. Claudia and Fred returned to the US to study at Indiana University, where they both earned advanced degrees. In 1971, the family moved to Gunnison, Colorado, where Claudia taught German, Spanish, drama and speech at Gunnison High School until 1990. Claudia also taught in Crested Butte and Ft. Collins between the years of 1992-98.

Claudia happily retired after a fulfilling teaching career and moved with Fred to Washington D.C., where she volunteered for the Smithsonian Museums and the Kennedy Center. Claudia and Fred both retired to Dillon, Colorado in 2003, where they enjoyed working at Copper Mountain, skiing, and sailing. After Fred passed away in 2005, Claudia continued to thrive in Summit County while working at Copper Mountain Resort and enthusiastically participating in multiple community and social groups. Claudia’s life passions were theater, singing, dancing, and travel.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Copper Mountain Resort on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 4-7 p.m. in the Grand Hall at East Village (0102 Wheeler Circle). In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Cloud’s name to: Bristlecone Homecare and Hospice or CaringBridge.
