Obituary: Shirley Sebek

September 21, 1927 - February 17, 2013

Shirley (Carlson) Sebek passed away on Sunday February 17, 2013 at the Bethany Rehabilitation Center in Lakewood, Colorado. She was born on September 21, 1927 in Chicago, IL to Harry and Theresa (Petrak) Carlson. She attended Lindblom High School where she discovered a love for literature and poetry. She was recognized as a member of the Honor Society, Senior Girls’ Council, Girls’ Athletic Assoc, Chicago Youth Conference and Junior Class Officer and was chosen to represent her class as their speaker at graduation. Shirley went on to attend DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana where she studied speech therapy. After marrying Frank Sebek on May 14, 1949, they moved to San Francisco, CA. While Frank served as a Lieutenant in the Navy during the Korean War, Shirley worked as a speech therapist at an elementary school. They moved back to the Chicago area to raise their family and Shirley became involved as a Girl Scout leader, PTA member as well as supporting many other school related programs. In retirement, they moved to Frisco, CO where they enjoyed hosting family and friends for 23 years. Shirley’s love and devotion to her family was a priority throughout her life. Her style, grace and unconditional love were evident to everyone who had the privilege to know her. She is survived by her husband, Frank Sebek; brother, Harry (Diane) Carlson; daughters: Deb (David) Benhart of Chicago, Cheryl (Kehne) Moeller of Atlanta, Karla (Bruce) Given of Houston; grandchildren: Dana (Justin) Murphy, Allison, Chris, Nick & Taylor Moeller, Kyle Given; and many beloved nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all of Shirley’s many friends in Colorado who became so dear to her heart. Please join us for a life celebration party from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, June 22nd at Karla Given’s home, 506 Water Dance, Frisco. Food and drinks provided.
