Polish deli brings European style to Breckenridge

The aptly named Taste of Poland is bringing a European flavor to Main Street Breckenridge this winter. The deli will offer traditional Polish food to stave off the winter chill and fuel energy for shopping, skiing and snowboarding afterwards.Both owners – Mike Sojda and Andrew Odorczuk – are originally from Poland. Sojda splits his time between Summit County and Chicago, while Odorczuk plans to be in Breckenridge full time. And it’s a good thing, too, because he’s in charge of the kitchen.”I love to cook,” said Odorczuk, who owned a large restaurant in his hometown of Sopot, Poland.Odorczuk first came to the United States six years ago, and ended up working in California driving and then organizing the loading of delivery trucks. It was through the truck business that Odorczuk met Sojda, and their friendship grew. Now, even though he’s been in Summit County for less than two months, Odorczuk says he likes Colorado much more than California.”The people are very nice, very friendly here,” he said. “They wish us success.”The deli offers sandwiches, Polish sausages, pierogies, soups and stews, all mixed with Odorczuk’s specialty sauces. Even the chips, cookies and snacks along the counter are from Poland, and have Polish language labels. Those truly in a rush will be able to buy a $2 to-go sandwich to shove into their pockets on the way to the lifts.”Polish food is the history of Poland,” said Odorczuk, who describes his fare as hearty, perfect for winter, with a rich, non-spicy taste. “Eat here and you’ll be full for the whole day,” he promised.The purpose of opening the deli in a place like Breckenridge was to offer something different and unique to the community. Odorczuk hopes people are curious about traditional Polish food, and will come in to give it a try.The deli is in the same building as the Twin Moose Yogurt Company. Bob Stanley, whose wife owns the yogurt company, says that he’s looking forward to working beside the deli.”It’s been a pleasure getting to know Andy and Mike,” Stanley said. “We’re very excited, especially since they’ve been feeding us, and we’ve been tasting their food.”Jeff Palomo owns the building, and says that the deli should be a good draw for winter crowds.”It’s a great addition to not only Breckenridge, but their concept fits with the building as well,” Palomo said. Now the building will have offerings for breakfast, lunch and dessert. “It’s a one-stop shop.” Taste of Poland is open now, but plans to have a grand-opening celebration in early December.
