SUMMIT COUNTY – Summit School District is now accepting preschool applications for local 3, 4 and 5 year olds.The Summit School District Preschool is offered in cooperation with Summit County Head Start and is designed to serve young children with developmental delays or identified disabilities. Also, parents of children who are identified by the Colorado Preschool Program guidelines as “at risk” or identified as income qualified by Summit County Head Start Program should apply.Using Creative Curriculum for Early Childhood and the Building Blocks Curriculum, students learn foundational skills for educational success, according to a press release from the school district.”Our preschool programs meet the needs of children and families with quality curriculum taught by highly qualified teachers,” Cindy Donahue, early childhood coordinator for Summit schools, said in the press release.Full- and half-day options are available and most of the programs are housed in the local elementary schools. A limited number of tuition spots for children without disabilities or the income qualified categorization are available. Currently, 125 to 130 students participate in the program.Applications are accepted year round, but program slots will fill up quickly for the 2007-2008 school year, the school district said. They are available in English and Spanish at the district’s central administration office and Breckenridge, Dillon Valley, Frisco, Silverthorne, Summit Cove and Upper Blue elementary schools as well as the Summit Education Center. The children have to be at least 3 years old by Oct. 1.Anyone who wants more information should contact, Cindy Donahue at (970) 513-0083 ext. 1314.Free Child Find screeningsAny parent with a child between birth and 5 years old who has questions about their child’s development should attend a free screening April 2 at the Summit Education Center.A team of educational and medical professionals will provide an assessment of the child’s speech/language, vision and hearing, motor abilities, learning abilities and social-emotional development.
