One dead in I-70 rollover early Sunday

A 24-year-old Silt man was killed when he was ejected during a one-car rollover accident on westbound Interstate 70 near Silt early Sunday morning.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, troopers were called to the scene at 2:23 a.m. at milepost 98, just east of Silt, and found the victim lying in the median near the wrecked 2001 Volkswagen Passat. The male driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Garfield County Coroner.

The name of the driver was not being released, pending the notification of family members.

The State Patrol said in a news release that the car veered onto the right shoulder when the driver steered back across the westbound lanes into the median. The car spun clockwise then rolled one-and-a-half times, landing on its roof.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle during the wreck, the State Patrol said.

“The Colorado State Patrol would like to remind everyone to always wear a seatbelt while traveling in a vehicle. It’s a decision which could save your life.”
