Arkansas River fishing, floating doing fine after Royal Gorge fire

UPPER ARKANSAS RIVER — The Arkansas River is on fire.

Figuratively speaking, that’s a good thing. The literal fire that hit the hillsides above the river near Cañon City last week has been snuffed out. What’s left is cool, clear water, and thousands of ravenous trout seeking a meal in the aftermath of the annual peak runoff.

“The fishing really turned on (Monday),” said Bill Edrington, author of “Fly Fishing the Arkansas” and founder of Royal Gorge Anglers in Cañon City (719-269-3474). “When the river comes down from runoff, the activity just goes insane around 1,000 cfs. The fish have had it with runoff. Now they are on the feed bag, and it’s that ‘fish in a barrel’ time.”
