Silverthorne Storm gymnasts finish regionals, prep for state meet

The Silverthorne Storm Gymnastics team competed at regionals at Thornton High School last weekend. Thirty-three of its 40 team members qualified for the state tournament: 13 qualified in all-around, with four all-around champions, and 13 first-place finishes total. A number of the girls got their highest scores of the season, hitting their best routines of the year. The team hopes to build on that effort at state in Aurora July 26 and 27. To qualify for state, team members had to place in the top six in their age group and division.

The optional team competed Friday, and all members qualified on at least one event. Laurel Bonner, 14, finished with a first-place beam routine, second on floor and fifth in all-around — all with a sore knee. Delani Bargell, 12, had a very clean bar routine to win that event; she also placed fifth all-around. Paige Schlegel, 12, had a strong meet overall, hitting the podium four times, including second place on beam and sixth in all-around. The compulsory 4 team overcame a number of falls on the beam to finish strong. Maddie Nations, 9, had her best meet to date, finishing first on bars, beam, floor and all-around, scoring 35.775. Hailey Harsch, 10, also had her best meet, improving her all-around score by two points for a 33.75. She placed first in all-around with a third-place finish on vault and floor. Raina Miller, 10, Schuyler Woodland, 10, joined her and the three stood to claim all podium spots with scores of nine or above. Nina Schamberger, 7, overcame stomach pain to win floor, bars and all-around. Bryton Ferrari, 9, hit a solid vault to score a 9.3 and win the event. Tai-Lee Smith, 10, won bars with a very strong routine while her sister, Jazlyn Smith, 11, hit the podium in four events. She finished second on the beam and fourth in all-around.
