Fall sports set to get rolling at Summit High

Hard to believe school has already been in session for a week, and September is just around the corner. While that may mean some unwelcome cooler temperatures, it also means a full fall schedule of prep sports kick off this week.

Summer practices are done and teams have finished their final preseason scrimmages.

“We’re excited to play,” said Summit High School athletic director Amy Raymond.

While the boys golf team is already at mid-season with five tournaments behind them, cross country, boys soccer and football all get underway this week, followed by girls volleyball and rugby next week.

Soccer starts Thursday with the team’s home opener against 3A State Champion Colorado Academy.

“It’s going to be a real tough match right off the start,” said head coach Tommy Gogolen.

But with recent scrimmages, Gogolen said his young team “showed over the weekend that they’re ready.”

The team graduated 11 seniors this year, including nine starters.

“We have a young squad we’re really excited about,” he said.

Coming off of an 11-4 season last year, Gogolen said their goal is to make it to the state tournament.

Cross country also gets up and running Thursday with a pre-state meet in Colorado Springs.

“It’s going to be a big test of where we are as a team,” Raymond said. “This pre-state meet will be against all the top teams.”

With a large number of freshman girls on the team last year, Raymond said it will be interesting to see where they stand.

Football kicks off Friday night with an away game at rival Battle Mountain.

“It’s always a good rivalry,” Raymond said.

The football team’s first home game will be the following Friday against Steamboat Springs.

Girls volleyball will set up their season with a home opener against Conifer Thursday, Sept. 5.

After a strong showing at Nationals this summer in Wisconsin, the State Champion girls rugby team will start their fall season with a Saturday home game against Fort Collins, Sept. 7.

Boys golf will continue their season next Tuesday in Vail.
