Summit High volleyball loses first game to Conifer

The Summit High School volleyball team went up against rival Conifer in its first match of the season last Thursday.

The Tigers started strong, winning the first set 25-18. They were unable to keep up their streak, however, and lost the following three sets 25-14, 25-20 and 25-23.

While Conifer is a tough team to face, head coach Liz Waddick said that Summit should have been able to beat them.

“Conifer does have a strong team and you could tell that in the end they were the more mature team. They were able to hold their own and not make mistakes, while we were making unforced errors, giving them points,” said Waddick.

This year’s Summit team is a mix of new and returning players. During Thursday’s game they were weakened by unforced errors and misserves, which they weren’t quite able to overcome. Scores in the third and fourth game were close, but the Tigers didn’t have enough time to make a comeback.

Senior Madi Webster had two aces and served for 15 points.

“In the first match, she served nine straight points, which gave us a lot of confidence. That was really important in the first game win,” Waddick said.

Teammate Kates Raymond, a returning player, finished with 14 kills while sophomore Madi Anderson had seven kills.

The Tigers will be working to run a quicker offense and minimize unforced errors for their next game. Their strengths, Waddick said, are “we’ve got some pretty big hitters. We’ve got a varied offense.”

The team is looking to improve upon last year’s success by pulling off a winning record and coming in the top two teams in the league, taking them to regionals which they just missed out on last year.

They will be playing an away game at Battle Mountain on Sept. 12, followed by hosting Steamboat Springs on their home court Sept. 14.

“We’re super excited about the season,” Waddick said. “We’ve got a lot to do, there’s always a ton of work to do. It was still as strong start even though we didn’t win.”
