Summit High School sports wrap-up: Tiger soccer scores big

The Summit boys soccer was the big story last week snapping Battle Mountain’s 27-game multi-season undefeated streak in Edwards Wednesday. Summit junior Thomas DeBonville scored two goals on the night leading the Tigers to a 2-1 win over the Huskies. The game brings the Tigers to 4-3-1 on the season. The crucial league win puts the Tigers at 4-1-1 and second place in league play. With the win, the team is in a good position to stay in contention going forward. Battle Mountain fell to 7-1 and still holds the top spot in the league with a 6-1 record in 4A Western Slope.

The Tigers’ Saturday game at Palisade was rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12. Their next game will be Tuesday at Rifle.

Cross-Country

The Tiger cross-country team competed in the Littleton Runner’s Roost Invitational at Dekoevend Park in Centennial Tuesday. Twenty-two out of 33 Summit team members finished with their fastest times of the season. Liam Meirow claimed another first place finish for the boys, continuing his undefeated season. Meirow also logged his fastest time of the season. Leading from the start of the race, he ran unchallenged for the lead. Robert Koegel was the next finisher for the Tigers, in 17th place. The boys team finished in fifth overall among 24 teams and 293 runners total. D’Evelyn’s boys team won with 73 points.

On the girls’ side, Ruthie Boyd finished in third place with a season best of 20:02. Boyd and Katherine Pappas paced each other aided by McKenna Ramsay in the first half of the race. Pappas finished in fourth with a season best of 20:13. Ramsay finished in 10th with a season best of 21:06. There were 314 girls in the race. The Summit girls finished second in the meet with 66 points. D’Evelyn won with 44.

The Tigers’ next meet will be the Dakota Ridge Invitational, held at Denver Botanical Gardens at Chatfield.

Volleyball

The Tiger girls had a convincing win at Englewood Tuesday winning 3-0 in straight sets, 25-9, 25-12 and 25-12. Their second game of the week resulted in a tough 3-2 loss to Palisade. The SHS team overcame a tightly contested two set deficit winning sets three and four, but fell to Palisade in the final set 15-10.

Summit followed up the tough loss with a win at Delta in three sets 25-22, 25-11, 25-23.

The team’s next scheduled game is at home against Battle Mountain on Wednesday.

Rugby

After a convincing 71-0 win over league opponent Chaparral Wednesday, the Rugby girls traveled to Utah for games against Utah North U-19 and Snow Canyon High School. On Friday, the lady ruggers lost a close game to Utah North U19, 17-12. They came away with a convincing 53-0 win over Snow Canyon Saturday. The Tiger girls will host league opponent Northside on Saturday, Oct. 5.
