SHS rugby: Team 1-1 in Utah Trip, final home game Saturday

The Summit girls rugby team traveled to Utah for games against Utah North U-19 and Snow Canyon High School over the weekend and will host its final home game Sunday.

“Last weekend was great. It was well worth the trip,” head coach Karl Barth told the Daily on Tuesday.

“The competition there was awesome,” team captain and All-American senior Lily Weldon said. “They don’t give up.”

Barth and his team organized the trip after playing both teams in tournaments last season. Barth said it’s part of continued effort to exchange home games with out-of-state opponents in consecutive seasons.

Earlier this season the rugby girls were scheduled to host Minnesota’s Armstrong rugby club, who ranked No. 10 at nationals last year, but travel complications caused the game to be canceled. Barth is hopeful the Minnesota team will be able to reschedule for next season.

“We’re just trying to get some out-of-state experience,” Barth said, explaining the desire to schedule games against opponents the Tiger girls aren’t as familiar with.

“It really tests them,” he said.

According to both Barth and Weldon, the team found the competition they were looking for in their trip to Utah.

In their first game of the two-game road trip, the lady ruggers lost a close one to Utah North U-19, 17-12.

“They were able to find our weakness,” Weldon said. “We handled the challenge well. Now we know how good we are and what our weaknesses are.”

The team rebounded in its second game with a convincing 53-0 win over Snow Canyon on Saturday.

But more than wins and losses, it was about the experience.

“It was a lot of fun,” Weldon said. “We had a lot of team bonding.”

While the team still has four regular season games on the schedule, it will host its final home game Saturday against Northside.

“I don’t know much about them,” Barth said. “This is their first year in the league.”

He added that he knew the team has been competitive against other league opponents.

The varsity game kicks off Saturday at 11 a.m. at Tiger Stadium with the junior varsity game to follow.
