USASA National Championships freeski schedule
The following dates are for open divisions only (18 years and old), but athletes in all divisions will be competing on all courses during the week. The terrain park and other event venues, including the slalom course on Copperopolis and boardercross course off American Eagle, will be closed to the public until competition ends.
April 9 — Training, all divisions
April 10 — Open skiercross, men and women
April 11 — Open slopestyle, men and women
April 12 — Open halfpipe, men and women
April 13 — Weather day, all divisions
Now that’s the way to cap off a season.
From April 3 to April 8, more than 400 youth and open-class snowboarders came to Copper Mountain Resort with families and friends in tow for the resort’s ninth annual USASA National Championships. Athletes came from every corner of the country and a few international hotbeds — Canada, New Zealand, Australia — for five days of competition in four events: slopestyle, halfpipe, boardercross and slalom, plus a late-night rail jam for each of the five competition groups. In those groups, athletes ranged from Ruggies (7 years old and younger) to Breakers (12-13 years old) to 50-plus slalom racers in the open division, including more than a few Olympians and Paralympians eyeing Nor Am titles on the boardercross course.
“The week was very busy and went very smooth,” said Matt Voegtle, Team Summit Colorado’s snowboard program director. “I am proud of how our athletes performed and kept their heads up through the highs and the lows of Nationals. There was one challenging weather day on Tuesday, but overall it was a great end to our season.”
As Voegtle said, Nationals is a perfect kiss-off to a long and successful season, and local ski club rippers were ready to shine on the biggest stage of their young careers. The biggest news of the weekend: 7-year-old Jacob Knight with Team Summit had several podium and top-10 finishes to claim the overall USASA national title for Ruggie boys — hopefully his first of many — and Silverthorne’s Chris Corning took gold in slopestyle for the open men’s division.
Before the start of freeski Nationals on April 9, we take a look at top finishes for select ages and events. To view the complete results, see the National Championships tab at http://www.usasa.org. All events are free and open to public spectators.
