Life on Two Wheels: XTerra off-road tris were just the beginning for The Cycle Effect’s Jaime Brede

Jaime Brede hasn't always been a beast on the bike.

For most of her life, the 37-year-old San Diego native was drawn more to swimming and horseback riding than pummeling down singletrack on two wheels. She has always been a die-hard athlete, competing in triathlons shortly after moving to Durango for college, but it wasn't until she found XTerra triathlons that her love for the bike really took hold.

In the triathlon world, XTerras are easily the biggest and the burliest. They're held entirely on off-road courses, forcing competitors to swim through open water before heading to steep, rock-strewn trails for the biking and running legs. Over the years competition has become increasingly fierce, drawing everyone from top-ranked trail runners to Olympic mountain bikers.

Since 2002, Brede has called Breckenridge home. You'll often find her training on local routes — she even manages to take phone calls and conduct interviews while in the saddle — and she's a fixture in the Summit Mountain Challenge, a summer-long race series held on her hometown trails.

Brede's bike has taken her across the nation and the world, but her true calling came when she was tabbed as local director for The Cycle Effect, an all-girls mountain bike team with chapters in Summit County and the Vail area. At first she wasn't sure if it would fit into her training schedule — until she went on her first ride with the girls.

Now in her second year as director, Brede has drawn 11 girls to The Cycle Effect, thanks in large part to her utter passion for the sport. Only two girls on this year's team had ever raced on a mountain bike, while two others had never even clipped into a pedal before joining the team. And Brede will continue passing on the love, one bike at a time.

"I've been racing mountain bikes for about three years and doing off-road triathlons for four. My bike has taken me all over the country racing, from road bike, time trial, short track, duathlon, criterium, road triathlon, XTerra, off-road triathlons, endurance mountain bike races and winter triathlons. Some of the highlights include ferrying bikes to the San Juan Islands and the XTerra World Championships in Maui. My bike has given me my dream job of sharing my passion for bikes with the girls of Summit County. The Cycle Effect has given me the opportunity to use the mountain bike as a vehicle for the education and empowerment of young women. Last year I represented the organization at the National Summit of the League of American Bicyclists in Washington, D.C."
