In Wednesday’s tri-meet, Summit wrestling took Middle Park and Clear Creek to the mat, signaling a strong start to 2013.

Summit landed a series of forfeits in the lower weight classes with Middle Park taking a few in the upper weight classes, leaving Nick Wittrock at 120, Daniel Lopez at 138, Alex Roque bumping up to 145, Brandon Ramirez at 152 and Tyler Blackford bumping up to 170.

Wittrock made quick work of putting his opponent on his back and pinning him in less than 30 seconds. Daniel Lopez fought through the full six minutes mostly on defense, where he responded to coach Pete Campbell’s shouts, “You cannot rest. Hips up. Face up. You’ve got moves down there. Let’s go.”

Roque faced tough competition in the higher weight class, something Campbell regretted because his pin with five seconds to go in the first period was the first of two home losses for the talented wrestler who likely could have won a bout at 138.

Ramirez pinned within 50 seconds and though Blackford carried his match into the second period, he ended the standoff with a pin, finalizing the 42-34 score.

The meet against the Clear Creek Golddiggers was closer, with a tiebreaker point being awarded to Summit for the 37-36 win. Ramirez had his second win of the night after dancing around the mat in neutral position. With seconds left in the second period, he made quick work of turning a headlock into a pin.

Ramirez’ wins were among those Campbell highlighted when he said, “We got kids that got wins who haven’t won yet this year.”

He added, “The kids did really good. They did exactly what I asked them to do, which is to not quit. We were going over it all week about leaving it on the mat and not quitting. We give up a lot of forfeits in the heavier weight classes.”

Not to say Middle Park and Clear Creek are to be taken lightly. Both have historically been tough teams for the Tigers, with Middle Park coached by a man some claim is among the best in the state, and Clear Creek presenting a tough lineup.

“We’ve always struggled against Middle Park because of their skill. We went out and outskilled them tonight,” Campbell said. “For us to win, we needed pins and not to get pinned. That’s what we did.”

That, and applying the other things the team worked on over winter break, like throws. Blackford won his varsity and exhibition matches with throws.

“I like to see the kids using what we work on,” Campbell said.

The coach set two goals at the start of the season – one being going undefeated in dual tournaments and the other to send four to state. He has his eyes on Carlos Lopez, Daniel, Wittrock and Blackford to continue to work their way into state caliber.

“We’re shaping up to be a good wrestling team. I think it’s going to be a good year for all of us,” Blackford said.
