Summit locals top podiums at Copper WinterBike, USATF Indoor Track National Champs

3A Colorado State High School Wrestling Championships | Denver, Feb. 17-19

The Summit High School wrestling program sent two athletes to the state championships at the Pepsi Center in Denver this past weekend: sophomore Alex Barella (35-10 overall record) for the 106-pound division and senior Dean Vangsnes (38-7) in the 182-pound division. Both wrestlers failed to win their first bouts of the 16-man championships bracket, sending them to the consolation tournament.

Barella lost his first-round match to Owen Berry of Buena Vista by fall at 1:30. The sophomore then beat Tony Gavette of Eaton High School by decision, 7-2, in the first consolation round. He lost to Shawn Higgins of Montezuma Cortez High School in the second consolation round by decision, 8-4, to give Barella a 36-12 record for the season.



Vangsnes lost in the first round to Justin Mosher of Olathe High School by fall at 1:11. He went on to win the first consolation round against Wyatt Johnson of East Park High School by fall at 3:31, and then lost the second consolation round to Elias Peroulis by fall at 4:57. (Peroulis went on to wrestle in the consolation championship round, where he lost to Colton Eberhardt of Lamar High School by decision, 5-3.) Vangsnes ended his senior year with a record of 39-9.

WinterBike | Copper Mountain, Feb. 18



The sixth edition of an annual winter bike race held at Copper Mountain Resort and hosted by Cloud City Wheelers, a cycling club from Leadville. The main event — an after-dark adult race on road, cobblestone and groomed Nordic trails — took more than 60 riders in six divisions, including singlespeed, on an 8-mile loop from Center Village to East Village and back. Winners for all divisions except for juniors were crowned after two laps on the course.

Summit County locals made the podium in every division except for juniors and singlespeed, including a win for Breckenridge native and Jelly Belly Cycling pro Taylor Shelden in the pro open men’s division. Silverthorne’s Shawna Henderson took second for the women’s pro open division, while Breck’s Lou Laurina placed third in the amateur men’s 18-39 division and Silverthorne’s Kevin Lovett took second in the amateur men’s 40+ division.

2017 National Masters Indoor Track Championships | Albuquerque, New Mexico Feb. 17-19

Two Summit County locals traveled to the 2017 National Masters Indoor Track Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this past weekend, where hundreds of Masters track runners, vaulters and more competed for three days in more than 100 events. The event is overseen by U.S.A. Track and Field and is held every other year in rotation with the outdoor championships.

Dillon’s Scott Siriano, a regular at the summertime Summit Trail Running Series, made the podium in three events for his age group (men’s 50-59): third in the 3,000-meter run and one-mile run, and first in the 4×400 relay. Siriano faced two USATF National Champions in the 3,000-meter race, including Mike McManus of Sacramento, California, and Francis Burdett of Springfield, Massachusetts.

Siriano’s fellow Summit local, Bob Cottrell, barely missed the podium in the men’s 800-meter dash (55-59 division) and finished in fourth with a time of 2:22.09, just 0.6 seconds off the third-place finisher.

Along with locals, runners broke two American records at Nationals. First was Bob Lida of Kansas, who broke the men’s 400-meter record (80+ division) with a time of 1:13.34, followed by Lorraine Jasper of Pennsylvania, who broke the women’s 400-meter record (55-59 division) with a time of 1:06.79.
