Sunday afternoon marked the end of the eighth annual Breckenridge 100 Mountain Bike Challenge, as winner Michael Weiss made his way to the finish line.

Weiss finished up first and rode through the finish line at Carter Park with a flat tire. He had been riding the last five miles of the race with a flat, after repairing two more along the entire course.

The hardest part for Weiss was the terrain and riding over bridges after a small amount of rain, making them slick, but he managed to overcome the obstacles and come out on top.

Cameron Chambers, the first-place singlespeed winner and third-place overall rider, had a good race without major mechanical problems. Although this was his first time competing in the Breck 100, Chambers said this course was the hardest 100-mile race he has done, not just in Colorado, but ever.

Chambers also applauded the Rocky Mountain Endurance team, who hosts the race, for its well-supported and marked trail, deeming it the most well-supported he has ever done.

Kalan Beisel, a season passholder in the Colorado Marathon Series, was a favorite to make it to the podium, but pulled out during the race after a flat tire. Zeke Hersh – who owns Blue River Anglers in Frisco – finished up in seventh-place overall, beating his 2011 time by 25 minutes.

Hersh described the course as “phenomenal” and “butter,” stating this year’s trail conditions were better than last year’s.

The Breck 100 race began early Sunday morning and took nearly 500 racers across town to Beaver Run where they began their ascent up Wheeler Pass. The course climbs more than 13,000 feet during its 100 miles.

The race is the fourth stop in the Colorado Rocky Mountain Endurance Series, and the fifth stop in the NUE National Series. This high-altitude race through the Rockies – which is arguably the toughest course in the national series – offers valuable points for the overall series title.
