The Barkley Ballroom opens tonight in Frisco

Daily News staff report

The Barkley Ballroom opens its doors tonight with five nights of live music weekly.

Known formerly as Barkley’s West, the new venue will continue in the traditions that have made it one of Frisco’s favorite spots through the years, with weekly Latino programming and live rock ‘n’ roll, but will bring in new types of programming to satisfy the needs of everyone in the county. Some of those new ideas are date nights with some of Summit County’s best executive chefs plus the state’s best jazz musicians and nationally recognized comedians.

“The bread and butter of The Barkley Ballroom will be bluegrass, latino and jam band music, but the versatility of the space will allow me to offer a certain bit of programming diversity not found in other venues,” said new owner Todd Altschuler. “There’s a group of people that may not want to go into a music venue and stand shoulder to shoulder but does like a night out with table service, food and wine and a mellow blues concert on a great sound system.”

The grand opening coincides with the first of a weekly bluegrass series. Every Wednesday, a rotating cast of bluegrass musicians will come together from 9 to midnight to entertain for free. Other events over the weekend are a collaboration of musicians from bands like Frogs Gone Fishin’ and The Congress on Thursday and local favorites Arnie Green and Bevan Frost on Saturday. There will be drink specials and giveaways all weekend to celebrate the grand opening.
