The Malai Llama, from Nederland, brings a psychedelic fusion of musical genres including rock ‘n roll, electronica and jazz to the stage at three20south Saturday. The five-piece instrumental band “pushes musical boundaries by combining the real energy of instrumentation with the electronic exploration of synthesizers, turntables and samples in dynamic song structures,” said Steven Govanlu (guitar, keys). “Each show is heightened by the energy and passion we pour into the music,” plus a synchronized light show.”Our inspiration comes from all over,” Govanlu said, but primarily “from the passion that drives the human soul and the freedom to be able to ‘paint’ whatever picture we want for our crowds.” Actual painting will also occur, with rock legend Richard Biffle, who does most of the band’s artwork, painting live at the show. Opening acts include DJF and Velocity Raptor; the latter features members of ReaLifeActual, The Malai Llama and Trichrome. Govanlu recounts a funny tour experience during a run of Telluride and Durango when the band’s Toyota 4Runner, also known as “the skull truck,” broke down in the middle of nowhere. “Luckily we had our car-savvy friend, Evan Capobianco, with us,” Govanlu said. “He fixed the truck on the side of the road with a Leatherman and we made it to the rest of our shows.” Hit three20south Saturday, sans Leatherman, for the musical stylings of The Malai Llama.Info: www.malaillama.com & www.three20south.com
