Breckenridge PD, CPW confirm mountain lion living in Cucumber Gulch

Officials with Colorado Parks and Wildlife have confirmed the presence of a mountain lion living in the area of Cucumber Gulch in Breckenridge.

The mountain lion has not behaved in a threatening way and has not been visible during daylight hours, according to a Breckenridge Police Department news release.

It is important to note that wildlife, including mountain lions, are not new to Summit County, the release stated.

Breckenridge police issued the following tips for residents living or recreating in mountain lion country:

• Make plenty of noise from dusk to dawn when mountain lions are most active.

• Closely supervise children whenever they play outdoors in areas where mountain lions are active. Talk with children about lions and teach them what to do if they meet one.

• When walking or hiking in lion country, travel in a group and make plenty of noise.

• If a lion is encountered, stay calm, move slowly and speak firmly. Stop or back away slowly if it is safe to do so. Running may stimulate a lion’s instinct to chase and attack.

• Appear larger by raising your arms and opening your jacket if wearing one.

• If a lion becomes aggressive, throw stones, branches or anything else in arm’s reach to convince it you are not prey and that you are a danger to it.

• Predators follow prey. Do not feed any wildlife.

• Keep your pet under your immediate control. Obey lease laws. Roaming pets are easy prey and can attract lions and other wild animals. Bring pets indoors at night.

• Don’t feed pets outside, as it can attract other animals that are eaten by lions. Store all garbage securely.

• Encourage neighbors to follow these simple precautions to prevent a possible lion confrontation.
