Twin Tunnels work impacting traffic delayed to after Christmas

Daily News staff report

Transportation officials are cancelling a series of overnight closures slated to take place this week at the Twin Tunnels widening project east of Idaho Springs on Interstate 70, due to recent snowstorms.

While some work will take place this week, traffic will not be impacted again until after Christmas.

Single-lane closures are set to resume next week to allow the concrete barrier to be reset and the highway to be restriped.

Drivers should expect some delays overnight from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. the following morning, when the left eastbound lane will be closed through the Twin Tunnels, and again from 6 p.m. Thursday through the following morning at 8 a.m. when there will be right or left lane closures on eastbound I-70.

Following the lane closures, further work impacting traffic will be put off until after New Year’s.

When the highway is reduced to a single lane, the speed limit drops to 35 mph.
