Westwood: A new citizen weighs in a gun laws
Ryan Summerlin January 23, 2013
As an American citizen of eight years I have taken great interest in the subject of gun laws, being a subject I knew nothing about before coming to live in the U.S. I wanted to comment on all the recent letters regarding gun laws. I have read a lot of very controversial letters recently, for and against this issue, but would just like to refer everyone back to Biff America’s editorial on the subject, back on July 29 of last year. This was written following the Aurora shooting but it is just as relevant today. In it he gives us statistics regarding gun use throughout the world and points out that “what is not subject for debate is that, in America, the gun-murder rate is almost 20 times higher than the next 22 richest nations.” Following that he goes on to say “the gun violence in this nation is an embarrassment. Of those 23 richest nations I mentioned earlier (this nation being one of them) 80 percent of all gun deaths are American deaths and 87 percent of all kids killed by guns are American kids.” Isn’t this enough evidence to try to do something about these appalling statistics? Isn’t it time to try to save some of the innocent children and adults who end up being killed by guns that are in the wrong hands?
