Summit County technology: Keep your company’s blog from getting blah

If you’re in charge of maintaining and writing your company’s blog, it’s highly likely that, at one point or another, you’ve run into a serious case of writer’s block (or perhaps even a total brick wall) when it comes to thinking up new topics to write about.
For you, dear friend, here are five fresh suggestions for interesting, compelling blog posts that can help get your blogging gears turning next time you run out of topic ideas.
1) Interview someone. Record an interview with an industry expert. Ask them great questions and dig deep into their answers — all the while focusing on topics your blog readers care about. You can post a copy of the audio file to your blog along with a text transcription for the search engines to grab and for those who prefer to read.
2) Conference takeaways. Have you been to an industry conference in the past year? Show your blog readers you’re up to date on the latest industry happenings by sharing your biggest conference findings, lessons learned, and takeaways.
3) Showcase a guest author. Invite someone in your industry or a related industry to write a helpful blog post on a topic that’s related to, but outside of, your area of expertise. The incentive for the author is the promotion of their knowledge and business; of course, make sure the expert gets a link back to his or her website! Meanwhile, your blog readers get a fresh article on an interesting, complementary topic you’ve not covered before.
4) Debunk an industry myth! Surely a large number of customers in your industry believe something that’s not quite correct. Perhaps in the real estate industry a large number of people believe that you always get the most bang for your buck when selling a house if you remodel your kitchen and bathrooms. Hands down, no exceptions. What an interesting article it could be if you broke this myth into pieces and proffered examples of specific instances when this wasn’t true at all.
5) Round-up time. Collect links to relevant news, interesting articles, products, stories, and the latest happenings in your industry. Combine these links into a weekly or monthly “Round-up” article.
Remember: your blog should offer its readers content they care about. When you write, remember you have a very specific audience with whom you’re looking to connect.
None of the suggestions listed above will provide any value if they’re not applied directly to topics your blog’s audiences truly care about. Know your target audience. Know what they care about. Keep your blog posts compelling and on-target and you’ll reap the rewards over time.
