Wyatt: On becoming Breckenlandia
August 9, 2013
“This land is your land, this land is my land / From California to the New York Island.” These are the initial lyrics of one of the greatest protest songs in American history. Woody Guthrie penned the words almost 70 years ago, and they are apt today. I went to a meeting on Monday night where nearly 250 of my fellow Summit Cove homeowners protested. Most are in favor of reducing carbon. We want our winters to be long and deep! And most were adamantly opposed to the solar industrial zone created by an arrogant school bureaucracy that ignored the use requirements in the free land they received, and moved ahead with virtually no community input. Heated at times, and rightfully so, tonight’s meeting is just the start. As the school board defended its actions and offered the pitiful compromise of moving the soccer field industrial zone to the roof of the school. The panels need to come down to restore any confidence in this school administration. I have lived in Summit Cove for 32 years and have watched resources go to other parts of the county (have you seen our roads?). We might as well change the name of the county to Breckenlandia, and I know the paper is aching to change its name to the Breckenridge Daily … It was probably easy for the school scions to push this through onto hapless unrepresented Summit Cove.
