Unfooled by Liddick’s prestidigitation on gun control (letter)

Re: June 23 Morgan Liddick’s “Charleston’s tragedy shouldn’t be about gun control

Mr. Liddick, perhaps you are correct in some small way that the tragedy that unfolded in Charleston should not come to be (only) about gun control. On the contrary, it may be about the lack of self-control many implement today with the same brazen lack of decency and callow dependence on the lurid and peripheral imagery used to present today’s disappearing act of journalists and traditional conservatives alike.

As with the magician you have conjured within yourself, selectively displaying or hiding the relevant information according to your sympathetic and perhaps yet to be empathetic audience, what passes for (your) editorial commentary is a foggy and glittery performance indeed. From your use of the word ‘welcomed’ to describe the manner in which the gun carried by the perpetrator of those nine murdered has served its grotesque purpose, to kill according to the deviant and grandiose choices of its carrier, to your misrepresentations of those many who are not in fact attempting to justify a ban of firearms (and not only on your left), your beliefs and casual sleight of hand (and pen) has dead aim – at the wrong target. Your view has long not been On Your Right but down-sight from far too behind.

The blame is likely best placed with the people who have yet to recognize that gun control is not about taking guns away from the right; it is about holding accountable the wrong on behalf of the unduly wronged.
