Founder’s Day celebrates Frisco’s heritage

On Sunday, July 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Frisco Historic Park and Museum, located at 120 Main St., will host the annual Frisco Founder’s Day celebration. This free event will highlight Frisco’s history with interactive activities and entertainment.

Visitors will have a chance to ride a burro, pan for gold, tour the Historic Park & Museum’s 12 buildings, enjoy refreshments or set out a lawn chair at the park for a day of entertainment. The free entertainment lineup at Chez’ Place Gazebo includes two roping demonstrations at noon and 2 p.m., a performance by a chamber ensemble from the National Repertory Orchestra at 11 a.m., music by the Summit Concert Band at 1 p.m. and a concert with bluegrass band Local Folk at 3 p.m. In addition, Summit Advocates for Gifted Education will be selling lemonade and ice cream as a fundraiser.

“It can be easy to forget that Frisco’s roots had nothing to do with ski resorts or a marina, but that instead, mining, ranching and farming played the most prominent roles in the early days of Frisco,” said Simone Belz, director of the Frisco Historic Park & Museum. “Founder’s Day is meant to bring us back 150 years to contemplate the town’s history in a fun and engaging way.”

Inspector Magic visits Summit County Library branches

All three branches continue the Summit County Library’s summer reading program next week with Inspector Magic’s Every Hero has a Story Magic Adventure. Starting at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 7, at the South Branch Library in Breckenridge, Inspector Magic will present his 45-minute program, featuring books and biographies of historical heroes. This highly energized and interactive program mixes comedy, magic and learning to keep the audience engaged and asking for more.

The story spans more than 200 years, beginning with the most famous magic trick a magician can do. Several 19th century heroes are discussed, as well as how these heroes influenced others and the part reading and libraries had upon them. The magic and illusions include an historical presentation of Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin’s Light and Heavy Chest, which was used to stop a war. Also, an amazing levitation is performed with the help of Harry Houdini.

On Wednesday, July 8, at 10:30 a.m. in Silverthorne, the North Branch Library hosts Inspector Magic’s show. Later that day at 1 p.m. at the Main Branch in Frisco, Inspector Magic will appear building self-esteem for all super heroes in the audience. Mark Weidhaas is from Colorado Springs and has been performing as Inspector Magic for 25 years. He encourages interested students of any age to consider performing as a magician and will share a trick with the audience that they can keep as his gift.

All branches of the library will be closed Saturday, July 4, for the Independence Day holiday, with the South and Main branches reopening on Sunday, July 5 at 1 p.m. Both the South and North branches will only host one story time next week. Children may read to the reading therapy dogs at the South Branch on Tuesday, July 7, and Wednesday, July 8, at noon and at the Main Branch on Wednesday, July 8, after the story time.
