Whittled down to virtually nothing, a five-person team pushed themselves to the mental and physical brink, as they overcame one pitfall after another on their way to summit the highest point in Southeast Asia.
According to a news release, famed mountaineer Hilaree O’Neill will share this gripping story about her team’s push to the top of Burma’s Hkakabo Razi, all in a mission to determine if it was indeed Southeast Asia’s highest point, Saturday at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge.
O’Neill will be the third and final installment of National Geographic Live at Breckenridge series. The first two came with renowned wildlife photographer Joel Satore, whose portraits of literally thousands of animals big and small stand as one of the most complete photographic wildlife journals on the planet, and Kobie Boykins, a NASA engineer who helped design the Mars Exploration Rovers.
For her talk, O’Neill will recall the tough decisions she had to make to keep the team together, complemented by the work of photographer Cory Richard and clips from Renan Ozturk’s searing documentary “Down to Nothing.”
The journey, described as “a harrowing expedition,” featured endless overland train rides, sketchy motorcycle trips in the rain and hellish jungle slogs.
The team battled through dwindling food supplies, logistical failures, howling winds, false summits, hypothermia, perilous gendarmes and —perhaps most threatening — personality clashes that threatened to unravel the expedition.
Tickets for Saturday’s show at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge are $25 to $35 with children and students getting in for $10. For more info, go to BreckCreate.org.
