Holiday baking class with Christy Rost

Baking at high altitude can be a challenge any time of the year, but during the Christmas holidays, when food becomes a primary focus, struggling with recipes designed for success at sea level can be particularly disappointing. Nearly every Summit County home baker has encountered cakes that rise splendidly in the oven only to collapse in the center, cookies that literally have to be scraped from the cookie sheet or pie crusts that are anything but flaky. Christy Rost is teaching a hands-on "Holiday Baking" class Sunday, Dec. 13 from 2-5 p.m. in her Swan's Nest studio kitchen. Students will don aprons, roll up their sleeves, measure and mix ingredients and learn the secrets to baking gorgeous two-layer cakes, pies and tarts and beautiful Christmas cookies. At the end of the class, students will take home a selection of desserts to share with their family and friends.

The cost of the Holiday Baking class is $95 and space is limited to 10 adult students so everyone has a full hands-on baking experience. This is not a children's class. Advance reservations are required, and payment for the class must be made at the time of the reservation. For questions or to register for this class, please email Chef Rost at christy@christyrost.com or call (970) 453-1755. Space is also available in Christy Rost's "Make-Ahead Holiday Side Dishes" demo class Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 6-9 p.m. The cost of the demo class is $75.

LAPS accepting toy/treat donations

Recommended Stories For You

The League for Animals and People of the Summit's (LAPS) annual Santa Paws Drive for new toys and treats for less fortunate local families' pets has started. Decorated donation bins are in 10 locations: Buffalo Mountain Animal Hospital, Petco, Murdoch's, Frisco Animal Hospital, A&A Pet Supply, Farmers Korner Veterinary Clinic, Breckenridge Animal Clinic, Animal Lover's Pet Supply, the Animal Shelter and town of Frisco Welcome Center. Please stop by and either donate a new toy/treat or fill out an application to receive some Christmas cheer for your pet — just ask for an application if they are not attached to the donation bin. Then drop it in the box along with the toys/treats and LAPS will contact you the week before Christmas to come pick up a gift for your pets. Help LAPS put a big smile on all the furry faces of the deserving pets who might not otherwise get something for the holidays. Some of the donations will go to all the Shelter animals to brighten their lives, too.
