Polish film posters at Denver Art Museum

The Western motion picture exported an epic vision of America. John Wayne, Henry Fonda and Kirk Douglas became legends throughout the world, especially in Poland. “Rebranded: Polish Film Posters for the American Western” presents 28 posters that typify the spirit of Polish poster design from the 1950s through the 1980s. The exhibition is on display at the Denver Art Museum from Sunday, Feb. 16, through Sunday, June 1.

Drawn entirely from the Autry National Center of the American West, these inventive works provide a glimpse into one of the most fascinating post-war developments in the chronicle of poster history. Free from commercial stranglehold, Polish artists did not promote these films through overtly glamorous, Hollywood-style imagery. Instead, they deployed a new arsenal of graphic interpretations to convey the essence of the movie.

With expressive impact, universally recognized symbols of the Western, such as the horse, six-shooter, Stetson and saddle, were used to catch the eye, offering a concise and often ingenious summary of each film.
