Editor’s picks: Summit Daily’s best bets for the weekend

You stay classy, Breckenridge.

The quote from “Anchorman” is the first thing that came to mind while I watched a Riverwalk Center security guard escort a woman off the stage at Wednesday night’s Calexico show. It was classy — he basically danced her off stage and gave her a twirl or two before walking away. It was the encore, and she was obviously feeling the music and let herself up onstage. She wasn’t trying to get close to the band — she kept herself tucked away in the corner, just getting down to the music.

I was impressed with the courteous way the security handled the event. It’s so much different than the way things are handled at many of the concerts I’ve been to.

It reminded me of an interaction I had with an officer just a few weeks ago. I had pulled over to one of the large turnouts in Blue River to finish my phone call before heading over Hoosier Pass. After a few minutes, a police officer pulled up next to me, and I worried I was doing something wrong. Turns out, he was just checking on my welfare — apparently someone had just hit a moose in the area. He was so polite, and it was obvious he just wanted to make sure I was OK. Not that I’ve had many run-ins with Johnny Law — just a speeding ticket (or two) when I was in my younger days — but it just reiterates why I love our little mountain town.

As we continue to grow and the county faces certain struggles that come with that type of growth, I hope we all can continue to have the same respect and courtesy for each other that we do now.

MOUNTAIN TOWN MUSIC

Brett Dennen headlines Keystone’s Mountain Town Music Festival on Saturday, Aug. 20. Other acts include Todo Mundo, Mingo Fishtrap and Miner, who are returning for their second year in a row. The music is free, and will be complemented by local food vendors who will be concocting their best peach recipes, and we all know how amazing the peaches are right now. The event starts at 1:30 p.m. and Dennen will take the stage at 8 p.m. Fireworks will close out the evening at 9:30. Go to keystonefestivals.com for more information.

GENUINE WINE AND JAZZ

The 32nd annual Copper Mountain Genuine Jazz and Wine Festival is back this weekend from Friday, Aug. 19 through Sunday, Aug. 21. Jazz stars in attendance will include Norman Brown, Richard Elliot, Rick Braun and Marion Meadows, to name a few. All ticketed performances are held indoors in a ballroom. Wine passes are available in addition to the pricing on concert packages. The tasting experience includes a commemorative glass for the festival, and varietals from labels like Ruffino, Dreaming Tree, Kim Crawford and Robert Mondavi. Go to coppercolorado.com for more information.

BIFA CONTINUES

The Breckenridge International Festival of Arts continues for its final weekend with performances by the Close-Act Theatre. Saurus is street theater that features stilt-walkers outfitted in 18-foot-tall dinosaur-like costumes on Aug. 19 and 21. STX, a choreographed drumming show featuring percussionists moving synchronously on stilts through the streets of downtown, performs on Aug. 18 and 20. The STREB company will also host events with dance and acrobatics. Check out the daily schedule each day in the Summit Daily.
