A&E Briefs: Blue River Bistro hosts wine dinner to benefit NRO

Enjoy a culinary adventure around Italy provided by the Blue River Bistro as they host the World Cuisine Wine Dinner. Owner Jay Beckerman is donating 100 percent of the proceeds from the event to the National Repertory Orchestra. The dinner will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Blue River Bistro, 305 N. Main St. in Breckenridge and will honor Gerry and Annette Fricke for their years of service and dedication to the NRO.

Gerry, Annette and their family have been coming to Summit County for more than 40 years. They built their home in Keystone in 1980, moved to Summit County permanently in 2001 and immediately became involved in the Summit County community.

“The National Repertory Orchestra holds a very special place in their hearts because of their lifetime tremendous love of music, but they have also generously helped in other organizations like the Lake Dillon Theater Company, Keystone Science School, Keystone Citizen League and The Summit Foundation,” said their daughter, Peggy Smith. “They are an inspiring example to all of us to use our skills, time and resources for the betterment of our communities.”

Longtime friend and Keystone resident Linda Clem said the Frickes give in many ways.

“The Fricke’s are generous and sustaining philanthropists throughout Summit County,” she said. “But amazingly, they also give the gift of time and talent in many directions. Whether Gerry is building a set or fixing a computer and Annette donating a gourmet dinner or helping as a Scrubbing Bubble or acting together as a host family for a musician or artist, they always manage to find time to give of their many talents.”

Chef Brandon Farr, of the Blue River Bistro, will take his guests on a culinary tour of Gerry and Annette’s favorite country, Italy. He will present a five-course dining experience, featuring wines from the most prestigious wine producing appellations paired with authentic cuisine from each region.

The chef’s introduction for the evening will be a micro calzone stuffed with capicola, prosciutto, shallots, garlic and basil ricotta baked and served with roasted heirloom tomato and tarragon sauce. The first course consists of romaine hearts wrapped in a parmesan crisp and served with a sherry grapefruit gruyere dressing, caramelized lemon and fried fennel root, paired with Lamberti Prosecco, Veneto. The second course includes seared albacore tuna crusted with coriander and oregano, seared and served with fried new potato, braised asparagus and grilled flat bread topped with a buttery hollandaise infused with port and thyme, paired with Villa Pozzi Nero D’Avola, Sicily. The third course contains Chianti braised beef short rib served with a port pomegranate sauce served with seared zucchini and savory French toast and fig butter, paired with IL Borro Super Tuscan, Tuscany. For dessert, fried pear stuffed with a honey goat cheese, served with a Madeira nutmeg caramel and paired with Chiarlo Nivoli Moscato, Piedmont.

Caryn and Peter Boddie present ‘Bygone Skiers and Lost Ski Hills’

On Thursday, Oct. 22, from 6:30-8 p.m., Caryn and Peter Boddie present, “Bygone Skiers and Lost Ski Hills,” as part of the continuing adult fall reading program, Stop Me if You’ve Read This One, at the Summit County Library. The Main Library in Frisco hosts this published couple for a multi-media presentation that will take attendees on a tour of the hills folks once skied in Summit County and other parts of Colorado.

“We also introduce the audience to the ski pioneers,” said Caryn Boddie.

According to the Boddies, avid skiers flocked to the northern reaches of the Centennial State for over a century. While the prized powder remains the same, the top skiing destinations bear only a faint resemblance to the resorts of previous generations. Neighborhood slopes, such as Tabernash Hill, featured little more than a rope tow and a storage shed. Other spots like Estes Park’s Old Man Mountain held tournaments and contests with Olympic participants. From the Cathy Cisar Winter Playground in Craig to Cheyenne Mountain’s Ski Broadmoor and everywhere in between, authors Caryn and Peter Boddie ask Summit County residents to join them on a tour through the lost ski areas of northern Colorado and the Front Range.

Caryn Boddie has been skiing since childhood. She learned at Loveland and Vail. Previously, she published the original “Hiker’s Guide to Colorado,” “Hiking Colorado I” and “Hiking Colorado II” with Peter Boddie. Caryn is an author, writer and communications specialist and works in the Denver metro area. Peter Boddie has been skiing since childhood. He learned in Connecticut. Peter is a hydrologist, natural scientist and geographer and works in the Denver metro area.

The fall reading program ends on Thursday, Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Library in Frisco with Colorado authors Terry Wright and Robert Spiller hosted by Beth Groundwater, local resident and author. The prize baskets will be awarded following the event.
