Way up in the mountains of Fairplay, in a straw-bale, solar-powered home, lives Katie Sherman, her husband, Dean, their two corgis and their kitty. Like any true Colorado girl, Sherman is an avid hiker, skier, snowshoer and gourmet cook, but her true passion is art. Sherman spends most of her time in her sewing room creating beautiful, breathtaking fabric landscapes, including some that wind up on one-of-a-kind greeting cards.

Meet Sherman and view her fabric pieces on display at Arts Alive! Gallery in Breckenridge during the Second Saturdays reception from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 14.

Worldly childhood

This fabric artist was not always found here in Colorado. Having grown up an Army brat, Sherman spent the majority of her childhood living in Panama and Germany. She found inspiration from her mother, who comes from a long line of artistic and gifted women. She lit the fire in Sherman at the young age of 6, when she taught her to sew her initials using simple embroidery.

Sherman’s upbringing is a huge part of her work, and without her world travels as a child, she would not have found her love of fabric art. Panama’s unique “mola” needle artwork was a particular source of inspiration for her getting started in fabric art. But even having traveled to and lived in all those beautiful places, the mountains of Colorado are what truly stole her heart.

Since her introduction to fabric art, Sherman has been a fixture in her sewing room. Prior to discovering her true passion for the medium, her work was mostly functional, practical home and clothing items. She credits her discovery of the incredible world of fabric art to a visit to California, where she learned about “accidental landscape” fabric patterns.

She particularly enjoys working with batik fabric, which often takes more than 40 people to create, making each piece of fabric a work of art in and of itself.

Sources of inspiration

From her worldly youth to the patient guiding hand of her mother and the purple mountain majesties of Colorado, Sherman is never lacking in sources of inspiration. The mountain scenes are her favorite, and as a result, she has been commissioned several times to do favorite Colorado peaks.

This free-spirit artist finds herself in the no-rules territory of art quilting and is able to truly express herself without limits, boundaries or guidelines. She pours her heart and soul into every piece, and each one is unique and, beautifully, Sherman.

Sherman’s works will be on display at Arts Alive! Gallery through the month of June. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. For more information, call (970) 453-0450.
