Fall Fest features inaugural Flavors of Frisco walk-around tasting

The town of Frisco will host Fall Fest, a celebration of Frisco restaurants and local and regional art, on Saturday, Sept. 6, and Sunday, Sept. 7, at the Frisco Historic Park and on Main Street. Part of this year’s festival will be the inaugural Flavors of Frisco event, highlighting small plates of signature dishes from 17 of the town’s restaurants.

“We have a thriving restaurant scene in Frisco, and this festival will introduce you to the best of what Frisco serves up under one big tasting tent,” said Nora Gilbertson, town of Frisco events manager. “This is going to push the culinary envelope for restaurants in Summit County, and we are going to see more folks from all over the county in Frisco’s restaurants.”

The culinary celebration was the brainchild of Scott Pohlman, owner of Prost on Frisco’s Main Street. He said he thought it would be a good idea to feature the town’s diverse restaurant community in a festival solely focused on Frisco.

“It will give opportunity to people who visit and Frisco locals to instead of going and buying a full meal, they can sample little bites of stuff from restaurants,” he said. “Frisco has Mexican, Chinese, steakhouses, a brewery — it’s a great way for everybody to get reintroduced to all the restaurants in Frisco.”

PRELUDE TO OKTOBERFEST

Pohlman said Prost would be serving up traditional Bavarian sausages and pretzels with house-made mustards as a prelude to Oktoberfest celebrations in Summit County.

“After the festival, we’ll have live music with an Austrian polka band at Prost to kick off Oktoberfest season,” he said. “We’ll also be tapping three Oktoberfest beers from Munich that are actually served in the beer tents in Munich. It’s pretty rare to get the beers that they serve in the tent at Oktoberfest, so we’re quite exited. It’ll be Saturday night after the Flavors of Frisco.”

Both Bagalis and its breakfast-serving counterpart across the street, Bread and Salt, will be participating in Flavors of Frisco, with chef-owner Michael Ulehla creating unique dishes for each restaurant, said Joyce De La Torre, co-owner and manager.

“Michael is going to do grilled watermelon, with a house-made duck prosciutto, he’s curing his own prosciutto here at Bagalis, with pistachios and blue cheese,” she said. “Michael is also going to be doing roast pig, he’ll roast a whole pig. He may do tacos with a corn and Palisade peach salsa.”

The pig will roast for six to eight hours in the oven at Bagalis, De La Torre said, and the sweet, juicy Palisade peaches will also make an appearance in the plate from Bread and Salt.

“For Bread and Salt, he’s going to sell organic Palisade peaches baked with a challah French toast,” she said.

LOCAL INTRODUCTION

Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant, which is set to open on Monday, Sept. 22, will also have a spot at Flavors of Frisco. Manager Shannon Hayhurst said Rio Grande would be putting out chips with its fresh salsa and guacamole, as well as a bite-sized entrée and an appetizer.

“We’ll be doing a smaller version of our chicken burrito topped with our fresh green chili,” she said. “And then we’ll also be doing one of our appetizers, which is fantastic, it’s a shrimp appetizer, shrimp diabla, it’s got a great flair and a little bit of a bite.”

Hayhurst said being a part of the event is a great opportunity for the restaurant to tease some of its great products and she can’t wait for people to have the chance to experience the full flavor of the Rio Grande menu.

“I’ll have my entire management team out there, including my kitchen managers,” she said. “They’ll be making things on site, which goes to show how fresh we are and how much we are a scratch kitchen.”

In addition to the Flavors of Frisco, the Fall Fest will include the Meet the Artists art festival, a concert from all-female Led Zeppelin cover band Lez Zeppelin and children’s activities. There will also be a beer garden featuring suds from Backcountry Brewery benefitting the Friends of the Dillon Ranger District, and Coyote Gold will be on hand with its signature Airstream serving up Colorado’s own “Microbrew of Margaritas.”

Food and beverage sales will available with Fall Fest bucks, which will be sold at the event. Each ticket is $1, and most items in the Flavors of Frisco tent will be between $2 and $6. Fall Fest bucks may be used at participating restaurants through Tuesday, Sept. 9.

“We hope a lot of people come out and support it because we’d like to make it an annual thing,” Pohlman said.
