Flights & Bites: Natural Grocers hosts Spring into Health Festival in Dillon

Natural Grocers, located at 761 W. Anemone Trail in Dillon, will host a Spring into Health Festival on Saturday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with featured speakers, free yoga, Zumba and qigong fitness classes as well as prizes from participating vendors. Sample high-quality, nutritious foods from vendors such as Coco Ridge coconut waters, Garden of Life, Runa natural energy drinks and Honey Stingers — and learn how your food is handled, from seed to table.

"It's something that we started last year, and we're planning on doing it annually every year," said Erin Fix, nutritional health coach for Natural Grocers. "It's a fun event to get people interested in healthy living and allowing people to try some different foods that we carry, as well as the fitness classes that are going to be here and nutrition classes that are going on … . It's an overall healthy, festive event."

The day will start at 10 a.m. with a Nutrition 101 presentation led by her, where attendees will learn basic principles of meal planning to help incorporate combinations of macronutrients into their diets for more balanced meals and to improve overall health.

"Something we really emphasize is balancing blood sugar," she said. "People aren't as informed about it, but it has a huge impact on all aspects of your healthy and well-being. We really focus on explaining how your food choices are going to impact that and support energy and a clear mind throughout the day."

An Intro to Essential Oils class will be held at noon. Learn how using essential oils can raise your mood, support emotional stability, build your immune system, assist in first aid and pain relief as well as clean the air in your environment. Essential oils are also useful as bug repellent, beauty products and cleaning products.

Lisa Julian, Ph.D., owner of Elevated Yoga & Holistic Health in Frisco, will lead a seminar titled Eat Your Electrons at 1:30 p.m., a discussion about how antioxidants found in leafy greens and vegetables — as well as berries and red wine — can heal your whole body and combat free radicals.

Celebrate National Trails Day at Smiling Moose Deli

Smiling Moose Deli is celebrating National Trails Day on Saturday, June 6, with buy one get one free Original Mo sandwiches at all of its Colorado-area locations, including restaurants at 842 Summit Blvd. in Frisco and 273 Summit Place in Silverthorne.

The Original Mo is the Smiling Moose's cheeseburger grinder, with a half-pound of chopped sirloin, with melted American cheese, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, banana peppers, red onions and mayo, drizzled with oil and vinegar and sprinkled with salt and pepper. The restaurant was born in Edwards, so adventure-themed food deals fit with its brand, said Trish Bennett, on behalf of Smiling Moose.

"They're really kind of all about finding the adventure, bold flavors and adventure in food, so they're looking at different days throughout the year that they can provide promotions around those adventures," Bennett said.

Chefs collaborate for raw, vegan cooking class in Eagle Ranch

Join raw food chef Tracy Coats and Colorful Cooking instructor Tracy Miller for a Raw & Vegan Cooking Class on Monday, June 8, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at a private home in Eagle Ranch, 66 Aster Court. This hands-on, private cooking class will feature a healthy, raw and vegan menu. Bring your apron, chef knife and drink of choice. A raw taco demonstration will start class, and, then, students will move to stations for a hands-on experience and finish with a Mexican feast.

The menu for the Mexican fiesta includes better-than-beef tacos, rajas tacos, raw and vegan tacos, watermelon slaw, sunflower refried beans, sweet and spicy stuffed pepper and orange spice-caramel flan — a low-glycemic, vegan dessert. Summer suds for Tap it Tuesday at Dillon Dam Brewery

Dillon Dam Brewery will tap a 5-gallon keg of Kiwi Strawberry Hefeweizen for its monthly Tap it Tuesday on June 9, with $5 half-pints while they last. The beer picks up a slightly pink hue from the strawberries and clocks in at 5.5 percent alcohol by volume.

"We took our hefeweizen and aged it with kiwi and strawberries — all fresh fruit, chopped and put into the keg," said Mike Bennett, head brewer for Dillon Dam. "It's got a nice banana, kind of a little bit heavier body, with the sweetness from the kiwis and the strawberries."

Dillon Dam also recently tapped its Double IPA, brewed with Jarrylo, El Dorado, Columbus and Cascade hops. The beer is 8 percent ABV, with a fruity profile and balancing bitterness, Bennett said.

"You get tropical fruit, watermelon, stone fruit, pear, a pretty fruity aroma," he said. "Columbus was used as the bittering hop, which gives it a nice kind of spicy bitterness."
