Special to the Daily |

Mountain Mentors is a local nonprofit organization that pairs responsible adult mentors with mentees ages 8-16. The current mentor of the month is Sarah McKenzie, with her mentee Milca.

Tell us about your background:

My name is Sarah McKenzie. I moved to Summit County 15 years ago from New England. I enjoy skiing, hiking, hanging out with my friends and my animals. I am inspired by nature and people in my life.

What led you to decide to become a mentor?

Once I heard about this program, I wanted to participate. I wanted to share some of my time and knowledge with someone younger in hopes that I could make a positive difference in their lives.

What do you enjoy most about being a mentor?

Spending time with and getting to know Milca through fun activities. Milca has a really big heart and has friends everywhere we go.

How does mentoring fit into your life?

It’s easier than you think. I have a really busy life, but Milca and I connect regularly by meeting up for activities and keeping in touch through Skype messaging and FaceTime.

What is one of your favorite activities you have done as a mentor?

I had a great time at Woodward, learning how to jump on the trampolines and watching Milca get stuck in the foam pit.

Do you have any advice for anyone who is considering becoming a mentor?

If you are interested, don’t wait to participate!

What Ana (Milca’s mom) has to say:

“We know Sarah is so great with Milca. At this point, we look at her as part of the family, really. She is a great person with a lot of patience and we are grateful to have her as a mentor to our daughter Milca.”

What Milca has to say about her mentor Sarah:

“Sarah is so awesome and cool. We really like spending time together, and my family likes her too. We love to go sledding together and go to Mountain Mentors activities.”
