As the mountain snow finally beings to melt, the National Repertory Orchestra offers another sure sign of summer: the start of its 56th annual season. The NRO, which draws an orchestra of 88 young musicians from around the world, will perform 16 concerts at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge from Saturday, June 13, to Friday, July 31.

The NRO is known for its ambitious programming of the classical repertoire, and this year's concerts include an encyclopedic selection of musical favorites. Symphonic works will be presented from classical greats such as Beethoven and Mozart, as well as from Romantic and modern masters including Tchaikovsky and Mahler. Vivaldi's timeless "Four Seasons" will headline a concert on Wednesday, July 8; less than three weeks later, a joint concert between the NRO and the Breckenridge Music Festival will celebrate the turn of seasons in modern fashion with Stravinsky's thumping masterpiece "The Rite of Spring."

The challenging repertoire is a testament to the talent and work ethic of the orchestra's musicians. The season opener represents "the annual realization of the NRO mission: changing lives through music," said Doug Adams, the organization's CEO. "The young musicians onstage are embarking on a rigorous, grueling and heart-warming experience, which will change their lives."

Music director and conductor Carl Topilow, now in his 38th season with the orchestra, has acquired a reputation for his outgoing performance and dramatic flare. A favorite annual event is Topilow's signature "Topilow Pops!" concert on Friday, July 17, which sees the multitalented conductor leading his orchestra with baton and clarinet through dynamic renditions of show tunes and pop hits from Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" to Pharrell's "Happy."

Those with a taste for the cinematic will also enjoy the Friday, July 3, "Space Spectacular," featuring feature film music from "Star Wars" to "ET," as well as classical composers' best imaginings of the cosmos. As the music is performed, the audience will be treated to a show of out-of-this-world footage from NASA.

As per tradition, the NRO will play a large part in Summit County's Fourth of July celebrations, starting the day with a free concert at Dillon Reservoir and finishing at the Riverwalk Center with the annual "Patriotic Salute" concert.

NRO musicians will participate in community outreach projects ranging from music therapy to musical-education programs at local schools. On Tuesday, June 23, the orchestra will put on a "Children's Concert & Instrument Petting Zoo," with musicians letting children hold and play real instruments after the show.

A number of acclaimed musical guests will enrich the summer schedule. Grammy-winning classical guitarist Jason Vieaux will join the orchestra on Saturday, June 27, for the NRO's "Pink Concert" to benefit the Shaw Breast Center & Cancer Clinic in Frisco. Summit County renowned nature photographer John Fielder will participate in an unprecedented audio-visual collaboration with American composer Mark O'Connor on Wednesday, July 1. Several world-class guest conductors will join Topilow throughout the season, including Daniel Hege, Michael Stern, Tito Munoz and JoAnn Falletta.

Tickets for most concerts range from $25 to $40, depending on seating. Tickets for youth ages 18 and younger are $7. As a part of its opening week, the NRO will put on a free community concert at the Riverwalk Center on Wednesday, June 17. Free ensemble concerts throughout the season include the Porch Series, sponsored and hosted by the Breckenridge Real Estate Association on Friday, June 19; Thursday, June 25; Friday, July 10, and Friday, July 24; and "Music at the Station" ensembles at Breckenridge's Main Street Station Plaza on Wednesday, June 24, and Tuesday, June 30.
