Support orphans in Kenya at fundraiser in Breckenridge

Summit Daily staff report

Downstairs at Eric's restaurant, in Breckenridge, will host a fundraiser to support orphans in Kenya on Thursday, Oct. 23. From 7 to 10 p.m., guests are welcome to indulge in beer and pizza for a cover fee of $20 per person. Guests can also participate in a raffle with amazing items donated by businesses from all over town, including Sun Logic, MotherLoaded Tavern, Starbucks, Beloved, Kenosha and many more.

All proceeds will go to Someone A World Away (SAWA), a nonprofit organization started by Eric's server Cara Lawler. The organization provides support to the El Shadai Grace Children's Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. Lawler spent several months with the children at El Shadai over the past year and is in constant contact with the staff at the orphanage about how to best serve the needs of the children.

The orphanage is run by a Kenyan family, who chose to leave their comfortable lives running a coffee and tea plantation and devote them instead to the care of orphaned children. Over the past seven years, they have rescued 23 children from various terrible situations and provided them with the love, shelter, food and education that they deserve. Some of the children lost their parents to illness, several were abused and others were abandoned for unknown reasons. After her first trip to Kenya, Lawler was so affected by the children and caring staff that she decided to start SAWA to continue to support El Shadai and help it build a sustainable, suitable home for years to come.

SAWA currently helps with the orphanage rent payment, supports a private school for the younger children, sponsors the students in secondary boarding schools and helps with daily needs such as food, clothes and medicine. Additionally, SAWA is collecting funds to build a new orphanage and eliminate rent payments altogether. The orphanage's current rental property is very small, unsanitary, unsafe and has no running water or electricity. SAWA's ultimate goal is to buy a plot of land and build a new home with adequate space and proper amenities to support the current 23 children and rescue many more.
