Weekend picks: ‘Get yur ass up the Pass’ in Fairplay burro race

I grew up on a small farm in Missouri, so when I first heard of Fairplay’s Burro Days, I knew it was my kind of event. We never had donkeys growing up, although my dad and his wife now have three, but you can bet my siblings and I spent our days crafting games involving horses, dogs and goats. The goats were never too thrilled with the obstacle courses we built for them, and I can imagine similar stubbornness in the burro race.

This event is not in Summit County, but if you’re willing to invest in a quick jaunt over Hoosier Pass, it will lead you to llama races, kiddies pack dog races, parades, contests, over 140 arts and crafts booths, food vendors and live music. An annual event in Fairplay since 1948, Burro Days celebrates the role of the burro in mining days of old, when miners would lead their trusty steeds to sites because they were loaded down with gear. Today, Fairplay’s racers lead burros loaded with a pack saddle and mining gear in a Long Course that goes up Mosquito Pass (elevation 13,188 feet) and returns to Fairplay with a distance of approximately 28-30 miles. The Short Course race is approximately 15 miles. It’s official slogan is “Get yur ass up the Pass.”

Fairplay reminds me a lot of my hometown, which must be why I love it so much. I’m going to have to bust out my cowboy boots for the BBQ and Barn Dance Saturday. Go to burrodays.com for a full schedule of activities.
