Young Composers Competition winners to perform concert in Frisco

Summit Daily staff report

The public is invited to hear original compositions by local young composers in a concert on Monday, March 16, at 7 p.m. at Summit Middle School. The free concert will encourage and support the aspiring young musicians and composers who entered their original works in the inaugural Young Composers Competition.

The competition, sponsored by Summit Music and Arts and the Breckenridge Music Festival's Music in the Schools program and funded by The Summit Foundation, provided students a chance to enter one or more original compositions for critique and was open to musicians and composers ages 10 to 18 residing in Clear Creek, Eagle, Grand, Lake, Park, Routt and Summit counties. The competition attracted 25 entries from local musicians.

Entries were divided into divisions according to age, with Division 1 for ages 16 to 18, Division 2 for ages 13 to 15 and Division 3 ages 10 to 12. Each piece was judged on style and form, melodic and harmonic technique and presentation. One of the requirements of the competition was that music had to be written down (scored) according to the established traditions of music notation.

'PERSONAL EXPRESSION'

"Writing a piece of music is a deep, personal expression, very much along the lines of the visual artist," said Len Rhodes, Summit Music and Arts artistic director and founder of the nationally acclaimed Pikes Peak Young Composers Competition. "Sharing and performing their creation with their peers and an audience places many demands, emotional and practical, on the young composer."

The concert will consist of first-, second-, third-place and honorable mention compositions, many of which will be performed by the composers. All composers received a certificate and a critique of their entry.
