IF YOU GO

What: Jazz fundraiser for Summit Music and Arts

When: Tuesday, Sept. 27; 6 p.m.

Where: Silverthorne Pavilion

Cost: Free admission

Summit Music and Arts (SMA) will celebrate the organization’s continued growth and success of its fall and winter concert series, and music education programs in the Summit County schools. Sponsored by the town of Silverthorne, the jazz fundraiser on Tuesday, Sept. 27, will begin at 6 p.m. at the Silverthorne Pavilion with a silent auction. Admission is free and no tickets are required. Featured musicians are SMA artistic director and artist in residence Len Rhodes on keyboard; vocalist Nina Waters; Mark Jeffery on bass guitar; and Ian Monk on drums with a guest appearance by Leon Joseph Littlebird. This annual fundraiser helps support the concert season and the continuance of music education classes within the Summit Middle School. There will be a cash bar and guests can bring their own snacks (outside alcohol is not permitted).

The 2016-17 concert series presents new and fresh talent combined with SMA’s chamber music performances. SMA continues its quest to provide a platform for Colorado-based professional artists while introducing new genres like “pop baroque fusion” and “gypsy jazz” into the series. Available at the fundraiser will be the 2016-17 season brochure, and all program information is available at http://www.summitmusicandarts.org.

Education is a priority for SMA as they continue to seek funding for the Summit Middle School music composition curriculum. The composition classes feed into SMA’s Young Composer Competition where students compose original music, have it professionally judged and perform their compositions in an annual concert, if placed. The competition is open to seven Colorado counties. Last year SMA was partially funded by The Summit Foundation, and SMA is in the process of reapplying for a grant for this school year. Summit Music and Arts offers students free admission to concerts, exposing them to high-quality professional musicians and musical experiences. SMA’s local artist exhibits at concerts have been a great success as SMA strives to “open the hearts and minds” of people of all ages.
