The Lake Dillon Theatre Company officially opens its 25th anniversary season with the new comedy “The Cake” tonight. Written by Emmy-nominated Bekah Brunstetter of NBC’s “This Is Us,” the play focuses on Della as she is just about to be a contestant on the Great American Baking Show. Her best friend’s daughter asks her to bake a wedding cake and Della is overjoyed until she learns the bride’s spouse-to-be is another bride, turning Della’s world upside down.

“The Cake” is directed by Melissa Livingston, who is excited to be directing her first production at the Lake Dillon Theatre Company. “Summit County is a beautiful place,” said Livingston in a press release. “You cannot get a more beautiful place than Summit County. But I also think (the LDTC staff) have created a special culture here, and I am really excited to be a part of it, interact with the artists here and bring a beautiful story to the people of this county.”

The play features three actors returning to the LDTC: Victoria Bundonis (“La Cage Aux Folles”), Claire Kennedy (“Constellations”) and Nina Waters (“Pretty Fire”). Rounding out the cast is Kenneth Wayne Bradley.

“To me this show is about love and listening and getting beyond labels,” said Bundonis, who plays Della, in the release. “It reminds us that people are not always the villains or heroes we see at first glance. Its message is timely.”

“The Cake” opens Friday, March 15, and runs through March 31. It contains adult language, brief partial nudity and sexual situations. It is recommended for mature audiences.

“We are excited for our 25th anniversary season where we look at the connections we make with the community, family and strangers that surround us,” LDTC artistic director Chris Alleman said. “With Brunstetter’s new play, we get to see both sides of this topic in a loving, touching and hilarious way.” Visit LakeDillonTheatre.org.
