The Geiger Counter: BBQ and Bourdain

Don’t know what to do this weekend? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Pull up a seat to the counter and I’ll tell you about everything that’s hot and happening.

Anniversary parties may be frequent as of late, but that’s by no means a bad thing. It allows folks to enjoy all of the good food — especially barbecue — and fun Summit County has to offer.

The first party is happening on Friday from 5–11 p.m. at The Bakers’ Brewery in Silverthorne. Four years have flown by since Bakers’ opened their doors and once again the brewpub is serving up their “Poorman’s Pairing” dinner. For only $25 you can sample four brews perfectly paired with four entree, appetizer and/or salad samples. The Huffy Boys will hit the stage at 8 with their hard rock covers of Nirvana, Tom Petty, Bowie, Queens of the Stone Age and others.

Ollie’s Pub and Grub is throwing their own anniversary shindig at their Frisco location. To celebrate a decade of business, their two-day event starts Friday at 8 p.m. and lasts until Saturday night. Peach Street Revival from Grand Junction will perform at 9 Friday night while Frisco bluegrass band Kickin Rocks will play at the same time on Saturday. But before the music begins, Ollie’s will have a cornhole tournament at 2 p.m. on Saturday followed by a free barbecue on the patio.

Also on Friday, Breckenridge’s National Repertory Orchestra is hosting a fundraiser featuring blues and barbecue at the Riverwalk Center from 5:30–9:30 p.m. Lion Young, an NRO alumnus, and his band will bring the tunes as you chow down on barbecue from 5 Star Catering. The event also includes drinks from Breckenridge Distillery, Breckenridge Brewery, Broken Compass Brewing and Carboy Winery along with access to a silent auction with items like lift tickets, lodging, golf, yoga, spa packages and more.

Still looking for more barbecue? Then head over to 10 Mile Music Hall for the grand opening celebration of Moe’s Original Bar B Que’s Frisco location on Saturday, June 8, from noon to 7 p.m. Located on the deck of the music venue, Moe’s will be roasting a pig and offering deals on specialty Mason jar cocktails.

If you prefer a night in with a home-cooked meal, I recommend spending your Friday at the Dillon Farmers Market, which is now officially open for the season. Happening every Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Sept. 13, Lodgepole Street in Dillon comes alive with fresh Colorado-grown produce, artisan goods, live music and family entertainment. There are a multitude of vendors, but be sure to pick up Palisade peaches from Forte Fruits, sample Winter Park Honey’s sweet harvest and stock up on handmade bath products from Conifer-based Taspen’s Organics.

What I’m Watching

‘Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown’

I’ve spent the past two weeks cleaning up my DVR of old programs and I finally mustered the strength to finish the last three seasons of CNN’s “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.”

Due to busy schedules and wanting to watch it as a family without distractions, episodes began piling up in the fall of 2017. Then, we he tragically died last summer I couldn’t bring myself to press “play” on the remote until last month.

Bourdain’s hit series was more than a travel show or a food show. It was a human show that highlighted the good and the bad of cultures in both far off destinations and places closer to home. From drinking a beer with President Barack Obama in Hanoi, to learning about Iran with journalists Jason Rezaian and Yeganeh Salehi, and to exploring Kenya with, he knew how to tell a story that was educating and entertaining.

His writing and outlook was a major inspiration to me and many others. Bourdain is irreplaceable and is still missed. Rest in peace, Bourdain. You can bet I’ll be celebrating your birthday on June 25, what your chef friends Eric Ripert and Jose Andres are declaring “Bourdain Day.”
