1 year ago: Silverthorne’s fire station could come sooner than anticipated
After nearly two decades of discussion, Silverthorne is getting closer to having its own fire station now that Silverthorne Town Council has given the green light for a final site plan. While Summit Fire & EMS previously gave an estimate that the project would break ground in the fall, council was told now a groundbreaking celebration could happen as soon as mid-April. Council approved a final site plan and a replat for the station at its March 13, 2024, meeting after being presented plans by Silverthorne’s contracted town planner, TJ Dlubac, and hearing from Fire Chief Travis Davis.

5 years ago: Summit County orders widespread business closures amid COVID-19 outbreak
Summit County officials issued a public health order March 16, 2020, announcing sweeping business closures throughout the area to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The order will include all municipalities. Only banks, grocery stores, liquor stores, marijuana dispensaries, pharmacies and gas stations will remain open. Gov. Jared Polis announced a statewide ban on dine-in restaurants and bars later that day. As of March 16, Summit County had reported two positive cases of COVID-19.

After more than two decades in the heart of Dillon, the Lake Dillon Theatre Co. is moving down the highway to Silverthorne, where a sprawling stage and theater space will become cultural cornerstones in a long-awaited downtown core. On March 17, 2015, the town of Silverthorne and the theater announced a long-term partnership set to begin in 2016. Along with the partnership, the town also unveiled preliminary plans for a multipurpose theater to be built just steps from the Silverthorne Pavilion. The planned 14,000-square-foot space is roughly six times larger than the theater company’s home in Dillon. Officials estimate the project will cost $6 million including design, planning and construction, with the town paying roughly $4 million through financing and general fund contributions.

15 years ago: Craigslist ad used for selling fraudulent ski passes in Breckenridge
Two local men were arrested March 11, 2010, and charged with selling fraudulent ski passes through Craigslist, according to a press release from Breckenridge Police Department. A tip had been received that Colorado and Epic ski passes were being sold through the website of online classified advertisements. The police department set up an undercover operation to catch the two, who are being charged with unlawful use of skiing facilities. In the past week, the police department has cited about eight people for ski pass fraud at Breckenridge Ski Resort.

30 years ago: Bag of hot coals blamed for fire causing $10,000 in damage in Wildernest
A bag of hot coals ignited a blaze on a condominium deck early March 18, 1995, resulting in about $10,000 in exterior damage. The coals had smoldered for about 30 hours before sparking a flame, estimates Lake Dillon Fire Chief Francis Winston. Winston said a short-term renter cleaned out the fireplace on March 16 — assuming the coals were cold, he put the bag of coals on the deck, where they eventually reignited.

125 years ago: Denver dentist set to arrive in Breckenridge for temporary stay
Dr. G. J. Harding, a professor of dentistry at the University of Denver and one of the leading dentists in the state, has consented to come to Breckenridge for a few days at the behest of Dr. C. H. Scott. Those wishing first-class dental work should call and see him promptly to make an appointment. He is expected in town April 1, 1900, and will stop at the Denver Hotel.
