1-year-old bear rescued in Aspen
ASPEN – A woman rescued a 1-year-old malnourished bear that emerged from hibernation weighing 13 pounds.
A Pitkin County animal shelter official says the woman found the bear near a road on Aspen Mountain and brought it to a nearby shelter. The bear is now at a wildlife rehabilitation center near Silt in western Colorado, where it is being given antibiotics and yogurt through a syringe.
The bear should’ve weighed more than 30 pounds when it came out of hibernation. Nanci Limbach, the founder of the rehabilitation center, says the bear might not survive. She says she hasn’t determined the bear’s gender.
Limbach says it’s not unusual for hibernating bears to come out from their dens in the first warm days of March.
