365 paintings in a year

KIMBERLY NICOLETTIsummit daily news

Ted Garcia’s commitment to art is akin to a skier or snowboarder making turns every day of the year, no matter how horrible the dirty snow gets in summer, no matter how bitter cold, icy or tourist-crowded it gets in the winter. You see, Garcia is painting outdoors every day, for 365 days in a row.Tonight, the Lake Dillon Art Center showcases his work. His passion for plein air imbues every piece, through his use of bold color, texture and an uninhibited brush.”Every scene is totally different, and he has different styles depending on the conditions (outdoors),” said artist Kris Lee, who carried his work in her former Frisco gallery. “He’s one of the stronger plein air artists.”Garcia worked as a commercial illustrator and studied with Don Sahli, who was mentored by one of the master painters of Russian impressionism. His approach blends the two styles and depicts everything from florals, oceans, mountains, buildings and more.”Our lives are about passion,” Garcia writes on his website. “My work is an attempt to bring the height of our passions into our daily lives and to share it with others.”He has won a number of awards, including Discover Channel’s Portrait Contest in 2005, Mountain Connection magazine’s 2005 Cover Contest and KBCO’s 2004 Cover Art finalist.Garcia’s exhibition at the Lake Dillon Art Center runs through Dec. 30.
