81-year-old woman injured in recycling accident

BRECKENRIDGE – The Breckenridge dropoff center for the Summit Recycling Project is back open. The center was forced to close for two days after an accident pinned an elderly woman against a trash receptacle and the subsequent insurance investigation.

Thursday, 81-year-old Harriet Birnberg was unloading recycling material from her car when a Summit Recycling Project truck rolled into her car. According to a Colorado State Patrol staff member, the parking brake for the truck was in place but is not meant to keep the truck from rolling backwards.

The collision pushed Birnberg’s car, pinning her between the bumper and the recycling bin. Birnberg suffered a fractured left hip, the state patrol staff member said, and was first taken to Breckenridge Medical Center before being transferred to a Denver hospital.

More information on Birnberg’s condition could not be obtained Monday. Birnberg gave both a Breckenridge and an Aurora address to state patrol troopers who responded to the accident.

Summit Recycling Project Executive Director Carly Wier said the dropoff center remained closed Friday while insurance investigators examined the scene. The center remained closed Saturday while recycling staff ran a household hazardous waste collection at the County Commons in Frisco. Wier said the Breckenridge center reopened Monday.
