A clarification on the intent of the First Amendment

Peter Odenbach, Fort Collins and Breckenridge

Letter-writer Colina Aragon made a statement Feb. 27 regarding the First Amendment that mirrors most opinions of neo-liberalism.

Just as the National Rifle Association and others twist the intent of the Second Amendment, the facts regarding the First Amendment are thus – “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion S”

In the 1530s, King Henry VIII of England broke from the Catholic Church when Pope Clement VII would not annul his marriage. Henry set himself up as the head of the Church of England.

This church officialdom is what the founding fathers were addressing in the First Amendment. They wanted all Americans to have the freedom to practice their own religion without interference or having an official religion created by the federal government.

Vouchers and faith-based initiatives proposals are simply that. They are matters to be disposed of one way or another by the legislative branch and have no design of “establishing a religion.”

If the school systems would spend more time teaching history instead of training children to take CSAP tests, those of us over 50 would not have to make such clarifications.
