The Backstage Theatre’s upcoming production of “Sylvia” now has its star pooch. Monty, owned by Sheila Hollenbeck, was cast as the “sassy, brassy canine who flirts shamelessly, appreciates Cole Porter music, has a deep understanding of Homer’s Iliad, and wholly embraces the animal instincts of her species,” as described by the Backstage’s artistic director, Christopher Willard.

“Sylvia” is the story of a stray dog taken in by a Manhattan couple at an inopportune time for the couple. Sylvia is portrayed by a woman on stage, but later revealed to audience members with a photograph of the real dog – in this production – Monty.

The romantic comedy will begin its run at the Breckenridge Theatre Feb. 2 and continue Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through March 11. Call (970) 453-0199 for tickets.
